I remember when I was old enough to realize that it was much colder in other parts of the I went to New Orleans and all I brought back was this hangover shirt of year we were going to parades, and I asked my mom how they had parades in snow up north. She gently informed me it was too cold to have Mardi Gras there. Thinking maybe there was some indoor alternative, I asked, “Well, what do they do instead?” “They don’t do anything.” It sounded so sad. I felt grateful to live where we had nice weather and parades as early as February. It was an early instance of a lifetime of revelations about how things are different here.
